Olympics early start

This morning our women hockey team started the Olympic tournament facing Japan in the first game. They lost. Not great. They are playing in Group B which means the top 3 teams qualify for the next round. 2 teams are out. Group A are automatically qualified for the play-offs. Fingers crossed we won’t be one of the two teams that won’t go thru.

The big grand opening of the games is tomorrow. Should be interesting to see how this Olympic Games will turn out – with all the corona spreading around keeping athletes in quarantine and not able to participate. I hope and pray that most of the events that we are interested in watching will be shown on hours when we are able to watch them. Always tricky with the time difference.

Finals Sweden vs. Spain

Woah – what a game! I’m beat. We actually managed to defeat Spain – for the first time in a very long time – and we are the new European Champions in handball. Wow. For the first time in 20 years. So fun. So proud of our team. And what a tournament they have played – a great team and amazing players. Congratulations! Can’t wait for the next tournament!

A very windy snowy Sunday – we haven’t been outdoors all day. Just spent the day in my corner watching TV all day. Made pancakes for lunch and a nice steak with gratin for dinner. So I have left the corner a  few times.

Spiken 50

A very special day for my family and especially for my parents. Today the competition “Spiken” celebrated 50 years on the same track – all events held and organized by my parents with some help from family and friends.

And today Hammarby honored my parents with these beautiful cakes, a big bouquet of flowers for my mom (since her birthday is coming up), a big silver trophy especially engraved and a nice speech from both the chairman of the committee and others. So nice that they got the extra credit and praise so well deserved. *so proud*

My hubby and I have spent 3-4 hrs putting up wallpaper all afternoon. Now we have crashed in our corners ready for dinner which is almost done. I made a taco pulled pork which cooks itself in the oven. Time to eat and relax the last hours before it is time to hug the pillow.

Finnkampen – day 2

Another sunny nice day with great performance and results. Today the competition started already at noon and finished around 4PM. So it wasn’t as cold to sit and watch today as it was last night.

After the event was finished the national team members threw our track&field manager in the water ditch – a tradition that goes way back. It was also her last event as manager – KarinTorneklint  is leaving after 8 years in charge. Now Kajsa Bergqvist is taking over the position – so they threw her in the ditch too. Lol.

Results after the second day:
Men Sweden 230 – Finland 201
Women Sweden 223,5 – Finland 207,5

Boys Sweden 108 – Finland 101
Girls Sweden 102 – Finland 110

Finnkampen – day 1

Back again. On a track&field event. At the Olympic Stadium in Stockholm. Finnkampen. Me and my parents had a great afternoon/evening cheering on our Swedish competitors. A sunny day but quite chilly towards the end – glad I had packed lots of warm clothes to add one piece whenever I needed to.

A lot of good results especially in the running events. Almgren managed to break the 49 year old Finnkampen record on 5000m from 1972 so that was pretty special.

Results after the first day:
Men Sweden 125 – Finland 101
Women Sweden 113 – Finland 91

Medal of Honour

This weekend the Swedish championships in track& field takes place in Borås. My parents are there to follow the event but also to be part of the banquet that was held last night.

During this banquet my dad was decorated with the highest Medal of Honour from the Swedish Athletics Association. Our friend G was also decorated with the same medal – congratulations to you both!

This medal in gold is only given to those who already have received the silver medal (both my parents have). To receive the silver medal you have to have distinguished yourself and been dedicated for at least 25 years and your club can recommend you to receive the medal.

To receive the next level you have to have contributed in a particularly distinguished way and made a big difference not only within your own track&field club but also nationally and for other track&field organisations. The receivers of this medal are chosen by the board of the Swedish Athletics Association. A big honour indeed to be selected!

Our hammer-thrower Grete won a gold medal in her disciplin yesterday – congratulations to you too!

One more day of track&field. The weather-conditions have been terrible – cold and rainy. Slightly better today. I hope my parents are able to stay warm and won’t catch a cold during this event. And safe travels home tonight!

Last day of the Olympics

A great Olympic Games for Sweden with a lot of medals – some surprises and some expected. And it’s been great to be able to follow the event during our summer vacation too and seen most of the – to us – interesting events live on tv.

The next Olympic Games will be held next year already since this one was postponed for a year. I believe Beijing will be hosting the winter games and the next summer games in 2024 will be held in Paris. Maybe we can go and see some of it, who knows.

Swedish medals;
1. Horse jumping – team (von Eckermann / Baryard Johnsson / Fredricson) – Gold
2. Horse jumping – individual (Peder Fredricson) – Silver

3. Soccer – ladies – Silver

4. Sailing 470 – (Dahlberg/Bergström) – Silver
5. Sailing Lacing Radial – (Josefin Olsson ) – Silver

6. Track & Field – Pole Jump (Armand Duplantis) – Gold
7. Track & Field – Discus (Daniel Ståhl) – Gold
8. Track & Field – Discus (Simon Pettersson ) – Silver

9. Swimming – 50 m (Sarah Sjöström) – Silver

Gold and silver!!

This morning our guests left shortly after breakfast. It’s been another windy day but we’ve had plenty of sports to enjoy so we’ve been inside a lot. First our women won the handball game this morning and then we managed to receive our first two medals – both gold (Daniel Ståhl) and silver (Simon Pettersson) in discus for men! Yeah! Our first Olympic track-and-field medals in 17 years! Wow. And we have more track-and-field competitors who have reached the finals so more chances await.

I made a lasagna for dinner tonight and it turned out pretty good. After dinner I went down for an evening dip in the ocean – in a desperat attempt to cool down a bit before going to bed. We’ve watched a movie together tonight (Hamilton – the musical) and had some ice cream for Saturday treat.

Olympics 2020 / 2021 Tokyo

Due to the covid19-pandemic the Olympics was postponed one year and the discussions have been many before they finally decided to hold the event. Tokyo, Japan, is hosting the event and the big opening ceremony is on Friday but today we start with the first soccer game – Sweden vs. USA (women). And we won!!! 3-0!!! Amazing start!

Sweden is participating with 138 athletes in 23 different sports.

Vasaloppet Elit 2021

Vasaloppet

Due to the pandemic, the Vasaloppet has taken a different form this year. The main event is for elit skiers only. Therefor the track has been open for a whole month (12 Feb – 7 Mar) for everyone else who wants to participate in order to spread out the skiers as much as possible in an event called Vasaåket. Also you can choose from 4 different lengths – 10, 30, 45 and 90 km. A friend of ours participated last weekend and managed to complete the 90km long rase. Great job!

Next year there will be a 100 years anniversary – hopefully the pandemic is no longer a problem and the world is back to some sort of normal.

A chilly sunny Sunday awaits. The weekends passes by way too quickly.
