This morning M took the bus down to our paradise and the rest of us went into the city to watch the changing of the guards at the royal palace.
Then we strolled around the Old Town and had a nice lunch before F went back home and the rest of us took the ferry over to Djurgården to visit the Vasa Museum.
After the museum we stopped by at my office where I work before we decided we wanted to go back home to rest for a bit. Now we are heading over to Heron City for dinner. A great day with great weather!
Castle of the month – Stockholm
The castle of the month of July – Stockholm.
My American sister and her youngest daughter came for a visit so we went to see the changing of the guards and the music parade at the Royal Castle. It was a very warm sunny day but fun to experience this event on site.
The castle Tre Kronor was first build in the 13th century but it was completely destroyed in a fire in 1697. Due to the great Nordic wars, it took until 1754 before the castle was restored and ready for new residents when King Adolf Fredrik and Queen Lovisa Ulrika moved in.
The castle has 1430 rooms of which 660 has windows. It is 42000m² large and the castle and the royal family has been guarded by Högvakten – the Main Guard – since 1523. Our present royal family has their residence at Drottningholm but they host a lot of representation events at the castle, such as meetings with the government, gala dinners, Nobel price winners, big announcements etc.
The castle is open to the public and contains a number of museums. For instance, you can visit the Royal Treasury museum, The Royal Armoury museum (the oldest museum in Sweden btw), The Tre Kronor museum and The Royal church as well as guided tours of some parts of the castle itself. A tour well worth a visit.
